Why use them?

  • Improved muscular power by simultaneously engaging the upper and lower limbs, resulting in more efficient movements and optimized performance.
  • Reduces muscle fatigue in the lower limbs and prolongs endurance by distributing muscle work between arms and legs.
  • Relief for joints, tendons and muscles during descents, helping to prevent pain and injury.
  • Increased stability and grip with every step, offering greater self-confidence and reducing the risk of slips or falls.

What are the drawbacks?

The disadvantages of using poles include an increase in heart rate and energy expenditure during exercise, as well as extra space and weight.

How to choose the right trail poles?

Length first

Buying guide recommendations generally suggest multiplying your height by 0.67 to determine the ideal pole length. In reality, the size of the poles should be chosen so that the angle of the elbow is around 90°, or even slightly more closed, when you hold the pole vertically.

How many strands to choose?

There are two types of stick: single-strand sticks, which are made of a single piece of wood, and folding sticks, also known as multi-strand sticks. Single-strand poles are lighter and sturdier, but they can be cumbersome, especially when you have to carry them throughout the race. If you opt for single-strand poles, it's advisable to hold them upside down, close to the balance point, so as not to impede the swinging movement of your arms when you're not using them.

As for folding poles, they offer the advantage of easy storage between uses. Some top-level runners even recommend this type of pole, as it allows you to fold them into your bag for technical mountain sections, where you need to be able to rest your hands on rocks for support. If possible, choose poles that are easy to fold and unfold.

Ergonomics are also important!

As well as choosing lightweight poles, it's important to choose a model that feels comfortable to hold. Take the time to test the handle to make sure it's comfortable. Also, make sure you choose a strap length that allows the stick to remain between your thumb and forefinger at the end of the push, which promotes better control.

It's also a good idea to ask about the possibility of changing consumables, i.e. the parts that wear out the sticks. Some models offer this option, which can extend the life of the sticks and avoid having to replace them entirely if specific parts wear out.

By taking these aspects into account, you'll be able to choose poles that meet your needs and offer optimum comfort during your practice.
