ALPINE HEMP Collection from Salewa - new material combinations for a natural combination of functionality and comfort on the mountain

Anyone who climbs must be able to trust. Confidence in one's climbing partner, in oneself and in one's equipment is the basis for successful climbing. When it comes to equipment, climbers naturally pay particular attention to materials that protect and offer freedom of movement at the same time. Climbing fans wear trousers and shirts that adapt to their movements and in which they simply feel comfortable. They are looking for products that are easy to care for, breathable, durable, light and relaxed in fit.

Salewa, the mountain sports company, is responding to the needs of the climbing community with a convincing material mix: in the new "Alpine Hemp" collection for climbers, hemp fibres are harmoniously combined with certified organic cotton, recycled polyester or elastane.

For the elasticity and abrasion resistance of the models worn in the climbing gym and on the rock, the textile experts rely on a hybrid construction using Durastretch technology. In terms of design, the brand is inspired by its home country. The Alpine Hemp collection features 13 models in the colours of the Dolomites.

A perfect combination with hemp

Extremely resistant and strong. Its basic structure contains hemp. This plant grows quickly and easily, needs little water and can do without herbicides and pesticides. As a textile fibre used in sportswear, it has interesting natural characteristics: It regulates temperature as well as humidity, it is breathable, anti-odour, and it dries very quickly. In addition, hemp is very strong and resistant to dirt. The characteristics of the plant explain why hemp has been used for thousands of years as one of the most important fibres in the world, a rise that was halted by the advent of cotton and later by synthetic fibres and bans on the cultivation of hemp, bans that did not differentiate between the useful plant and the suppliers of drugs.

Promoting the cultivation of hemp in South Tyrol

Hemp has a long tradition in the Alps, and Italy was once the largest producer of high-quality industrial hemp. With this new collection, SALEWA wants to stimulate a sustainable local circular economy, with respect for natural resources. Since 2016, the mountain sports company has been working to revive the tradition of hemp cultivation in Italy. 10% of the turnover generated by the Alpine Hemp collection will be reinvested in the local cultivation of this plant. In this way, knowledge and tradition will be revived and garments that meet the strict requirements of this functional area will be produced. Innovative hybrid technologies will add value to the Alpine Hemp collection in terms of durability and functionality. The result is the new Alpine Hemp collection. It combines natural fibres with Durastretch technology.

Hemp, recycled polyester fibres and elastane have been blended into the newly developed Alpine Hemp ripstop fabric for more flexibility and freedom of movement. For shirts and tights, SALEWA uses Alpine Hemp jersey, a combination of hemp, organic cotton and recycled polyester. The constructions make the textiles highly breathable and abrasion resistant, as well as extremely comfortable and elastic.

This collection will make the climbing community happy to be able to enjoy their favourite sport. The models are also both simple and casual. In terms of colour, the design team has opted for the naturally bright colours of the Dolomites, the heart and soul of SALEWA.
