Icebreaker in full transparency!

Icebreaker in full transparency!

Transparency principle :

Icebreaker was born out of the need to increase transparency, openness and honesty in the textile industry and to offer natural performance clothing.
We believe that people need to know exactly what they are wearing, how it was made, but also the effects of the choices they make.

Icebreaker ensures its transparency by developing a corporate ecosystem based on direct and long-term relationships. These relationships are open and honest. We don't want to hide anything from you. We do not use intermediaries and do not allow subcontracting beyond suppliers that we have directly approved.

We know exactly where our fibre comes from and we ensure that our breeders follow the best environmental and animal welfare practices. We know exactly where our clothing is produced. We consider ourselves responsible for our entire production system.

Transparency provides a wealth of information about the decisions we make. We need it. It will allow Icebreaker, our industry and our entire business system to evolve and improve.

The use of Merino Wool :

The Company Icebreaker is based on the use of ultra-fine merino wool, purchased directly from carefully selectedNew Zealand farms. All our garments are still based on this incredible natural fibre.

How do we make a fibre that outperforms synthetic fabrics and is better for the environment?

Actually, we don't make it. The merino sheep do. At Icebreaker, we have more than 21 years of experience specifying premium merino wool that's ethically sourced.

Merino is different from sheep that simply graze on the plains. They have evolved to survive the scorching summers and freezing winters of New Zealand's Southern Alps.
The reason they can cope with such wide temperature ranges is their incredible fleece. Its fibres are five times finer than a human hair, and twice as fine as conventional wool. This makes them lighter, more breathable and more insulating.
The merino summer fleece keeps them cool when temperatures exceed 30°C. In winter, sheep develop an extra fleece. This keeps them warm when temperatures drop below -10°C. A normal sheep would not survive such conditions.

MERINO WOOL SUPPLY PLATFORM

Right from the start, Icebreaker realized that a long-term supply of high-quality merino wool was essential. We were able to respond to this by offering a secure future for our farmers.
The contract system developed by Jeremy Moon set a fair price for farmers and for Icebreaker and guaranteed a commitment of up to three years.
Icebreaker loves innovation, and this has led us to go even further. This season, Icebreaker offers New Zealand farming families a ten-year wool supply contract.
In exchange, the farmers Icebreaker are committed to providing quality merino wool, produced to high ethical standards of animal welfare and the environment.

The breeders Icebreaker are committed to respecting a very strict animal health code, which even applies to the sheepdogs in their kennel.
In 2008, Icebreaker was the first company in the outerwear sector to ban mulesing in order to improve animal living conditions. Mulesing is the removal of pieces of woolly skin from the rump of sheep to prevent the transmission of myiasis. Farmers Icebreaker have made this unnecessary through integrated management, prevention and treatment approaches. We are pleased to see that this innovation is now widely adopted by the industry.

REDUCE OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

LOGISTICS AND TRANSPORT
Whenever possible, we prefer sea freight to air freight in order to reduce costs and environmental impact.

Currently, 76% of our products are transported by sea. Thanks to careful planning, we have been able to limit air freight to 10% of our total freight.

CHEMICAL CONTROL
Production processes from Icebreaker must be safe for people and the environment.

Icebreaker adheres to the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) Restricted Substance List (RSL). This reference tool is based on the most stringent global standards and regulations. It clearly lists the materials and substances that our suppliers may or may not use. This RSL allows us to ensure that our requirements are aligned with industry best practice and comply with the latest regulations.
All suppliers Icebreaker are committed to respecting this list from the beginning of our business relationship. Our independent audits ensure that our plants follow best practice in the storage, handling and disposal of all waste and chemicals.

WASTE, WATER AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT

All plants Icebreaker must meet basic environmental standards. The audit process Icebreaker oversees the management of plant waste. The plants Icebreaker currently score 8.7/10 for waste management, above the industry average of 7.1/10. However, there is still room for improvement, and in our next transparency report we will develop a set of clear environmental standards for plants.

OUR DESIGN PRINCIPLES

1. SIMPLICITY
Elegant simplicity is the best way to prevent a garment from going out of fashion.

2. LONGERVITY
Icebreaker is the antithesis of ephemeral fashion. Our goal is to create garments that will be with you for many seasons, thanks to their performance.

3. POLYVALENCE
Our garments are suitable for more than one use: we create versatile clothing that fits your life and style, in the mountains, in the city and at home.

4. UTILITY
We create clothing that meets the needs of your body when it is active.

MAIN PRODUCTS

CORESPUN
Our customers demand lighter fabrics. However, their lightness makes them fragile, which can cause holes. We discovered that by wrapping merino wool around an ultra-thin nylon core, we could improve the strength of the fabric. This creates a much more durable garment without affecting the comfort or odour resistance of the merino wool against the skin.

REALFLEECE®
It is shocking that what is commonly known as "fleece" is actually not wool at all. It is a plastic, polyester fabric. We want to give back its original meaning to this word, by making polar fleece out of wool. Our RealFLEECE®fabric is brushed, for exceptional softness and lightness.
