What is Trail Running?

The Trail Running is a running sport in the wilderness, this practice has been democratized quite recently and today is part of the sports in full expansion, more than 8 million practitioners in Europe alone. And we understand why, the trail is a sporting activity that combines nature, effort, discovery and performance on different types of terrain.

Whether it's for fun, discovering new landscapes and trails or setting new challenges, surpassing oneself, the trail proves to be the perfect hobby. And when you start out, you quickly get a taste for it.

Some traileurs will train for more or less long trail races to aim for performance, a set time, or sometimes simply challenge themselves to finish the race.

Indeed, there are several types of trail running:

  • The discovery trail with a distance of up to 25 km, with a positive difference in height of 0-400m.
  • The short distance trail between 15 and 42km, with a positive difference in altitude of more than 400m.
  • The trail with a distance between 42 and 80km, with a positive difference in altitude of more than 600m.
  • The ultra trail with a distance of more than 80km, with a vertical drop of more than 800m.
  • Verticals between 1 and 8km with a positive difference in altitude of more than 500m.
  • The skyrunning is the most technical race which bears its name because the participants in these races will evolve between sky and earth. It is a race in the high mountains at an altitude above 2000m where the climbing difficulty does not exceed degree 2 and where the inclination is more than 30%.

We can cite the few races that are now very successful in the world of trail: Ultra trail du Mont Blanc, Lavaredo Trail, Tor des Géants, Diagonale des fous, The Templars, Mont Blanc marathon, ...

Whatever your level, you need a good trail equipment that adapts to your practice and the season you practice.

Choosing the right equipment for your trail outings

The basis of trail equipment is having good running shoes. To do this, you must first ask yourself about your practice (long or short distance), the frequency of your sessions, the type of terrain on which you will run, the type of race you plan to do. Then you need to look at the protection, waterproofing, breathability and grip you need. (To find out more).

  • A membranous shoe from autumn to winter and for the practice in high mountains.
  • A light shoe for the vertical kilometre.
  • A shoe that suits you for the medium distance.
  • A shoe that suits you for the long distance, in general it is a shoe with more cushioning.
  • A shoe with more protection and resistance for trails in the scree.
