Telemark is a set of Nordic skiing techniques adapted to downhill skiing with the free heel (not attached to the ski), which allows you to execute harmonious turns known as "telemark turns ". The telemark turn is done with a bending of the inner leg. It is one of the oldest skiing techniques, invented in 1868 by a carpenter from the county of Telemark in Norway, Sondre Norheim.
In addition to a good pair of thighs, telemark skiing requires specific equipment. You will have to have adapted boots and bindings.
The telemark boot is a specific boot that is equipped with a gusset on the front of the foot to fold when you take the telemark step. There are different standards: The traditional 75mm standard is a shoe with a duck beak and only works with standard 75 cable bindings. The NTN standard, the new standard, the shoe hooks onto the binding from underneath, the foot no longer moves sideways and provides better precision. The NNBC standard for those who want to go Nordic hiking. You will find our Scarpa quality Telemark shoes on Alpinstore.
Telemark bindings come in 2 categories: 75mm standard bindings, cable bindings, which bring flexibility and softness, this is the traditional standard. The NTN standard bindings, new standard, the grip is under the foot which brings a better steering of the ski and therefore more precision. Other advantages, these bindings are side release and are all equipped with the touring mode.
Suitable for the slopes, freeride or freestyle, telemark skiing is ideally practiced with alpine skis with a wood core and a soft heel. There are different schools on the choice of the size of the telemark ski, we advise you to take to its size.
