Are you tempted to buy an airbag with a cartridge release?

You want to know more about airbag with cartridge, we guide you in your purchase. First of all, you probably want to know how the cartridge airbag works. To trigger the airbag, you pull on the handle, this pulls on a cable which in turn activates a needle that eventually perforates the gas cartridge. The gas cartridge fills the balloon at a pressure of 300 bars very quickly (on average 3 seconds) to keep the skier on the surface in case of avalanche as quickly as possible. This is the principle of reverse segregation, the larger you are (thanks to the airbag) the more you are pushed towards the surface of the avalanche.

Be careful, even if we strongly recommend you to be equipped with an airbag for your backcountry skiing, it is not an insurance, the airbag increases your chances of survival but it does not guarantee to save your life every time, so caution is the key word. Moreover it is important to be equipped with all the necessary equipment safety equipment: avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe.

How do I recharge the cartridge of an anti-avalanche airbag backpack?

Unlike an electrically triggered airbag, the cartridge triggered airbag must be changed as soon as it is used. Indeed, when you trigger your airbag, the entire cartridge is emptied to inflate the airbags. So you have to buy a new cartridge. Either you choose a cheap but heavy metal cylinder or you buy a lighter but more expensive carbon cartridge.

Before buying a cartridge, check that it is compatible with your airbag. Many airbags have their own trigger set and are only compatible with their own cartridge.
