How to choose the right men's fleece jacket?

A fleece is chosen according to the weather conditions and the way you want to wear it (as outerwear or under a jacket), but also according to the circumstances in which you will use it - on a daily basis or for your sports activities.

FOR SPORTS USE: ski fleece, hiking fleece, fleece for trail running...

A choice linked to the intensity of your efforts!

The more intense the effort you make, the higher your body temperature rises and the more you sweat. The evaporation of this perspiration then allows us to regulate our temperature. Also...

In case of intense sport, it is recommended to choose a fleece that is not too thick, or even thin and very breathable, capable of evacuating this moisture. All this added to technical underwear for maximum breathability. It is also important that your fleece is zipped, in whole or in part. In the event of "overheating", you can regulate ventilation by opening your fleece.

If your physical activity is less intense and interspersed with more static moments, you will warm up less quickly and perspire less, if at all. You should therefore choose a thicker fleece, even if it is slightly less breathable. like the Lafuma hot fleeces.

A different mountain fleece according to the season:

You will also choose your fleece depending on the season. You don't wear the same polar for a mountain hike in January, April or July.

. In winter, when the temperatures are low, when it can snow or wind, the "layering" or "multilayer system" is a must for everyone. You will therefore wear the fleece under a down jacket or parka. It will constitute the intermediate layer intended primarily to insulate you from the cold. Here you can choose either a thin fleece or a polar average thickness, depending on the performance of your parka or cuddly toy in terms of heat.

. In mid-season, when the temperatures are milder, you can wear your fleece either under a simple waterproof windbreaker if the weather is wet and windy, either use your jacket or fleece sweater as outerwear.

. On sunny days, a polar light - or sleeveless vest - will always be useful to you to adapt your outfit as the day progresses, as the mountain can reserve cool mornings and evenings, even in summer.

FOR DAILY USE: a simple and multiple choice at the same time!

Outdoor jackets for all seasons!

. For the winter period, look for the warmest and thickest models, possibly lined with sherpa, making sure that your fleece has undergone water-repellent treatment.

. At mid-season, focus on a model of medium thickness, if possible water-repellent. The polar is also often used as a lining. At this time of the year, you can therefore also bet on a parkaa windbreaker or a jacket knitwear lined with polar.

. In the summer, the polar fine will always be useful to you in the early morning or evening, when it is cool.

Out of the sports framework, your choice is therefore simple and only dictated by the weather! All that remains is to define the cut and style you prefer!

From sherpa fleece to microfleece... a whole range of men's fleeces at Alpinstore.

Polar fleece is not reserved exclusively for the extreme cold! In fact, there is a whole range of fleece according to their weight, more or less warm, having undergone or not specific treatments to improve their effectiveness or longevity. The North Face fleece range offers different thicknesses. Here are a few guidelines to help you find your way around.

Polar fleeces can be classified into 3 main categories, according to their thickness and therefore their weight per square metre.

  • 1) Large fleeces of 300 g/m2 and more, for winter!

These jackets, jackets or pullovers made of thick, ultra-warm fle ece - sometimes also called "heavyweight" - are designed for cold winter temperatures and will bring you maximum warmth. They will suit men who are looking for a warm, comfortable, practical and cosy garment, for everyday use or for simple walks.

  • 2) Intermediate fleeces from 200 g/m2 to 290 g/m2!

These fleeces - also known as "Midweight" fleeces - are the most versatile fleeces. If you don't do intensive physical activity, you can wear them either as outerwear when the temperature is around 10° or as an intermediate layer if the temperature falls between 0 and 5 degrees.

  • 3) Thin fleeces or microfleece fabrics weighing less than 200 g/m2!

These fleeces - also known as microfleece or "Lightweight" fleeces - are fine and ultra-light. If they are not designed to withstand extreme temperatures, they will be perfect for layering. In autumn, you'll be happy to wear these microfleece under a raincoat or windproof jacket. In winter, they are also very useful under a jacket or parka. Less warm than thicker fleeces, they are even more breathable... an asset for anyone who enjoys jogging, trail running or any other intensive physical activity.

The advantages of a man's fleece

Our wardrobes all have a garment or accessory made of fleece. This craze for fleeces is easily explained by these 5 main assets:

Asset N°1: the polar fle ece is an excellent thermal insulator.

Fleece is a hollow fibre with air pockets that provides excellent insulation. Like wool or down, it does not actually produce heat but retains the body's heat.

The result: in winter, a thick fleece jacket effectively protects us from the cold!

In fact, the denser a fleece is, the greater its insulating power and therefore its "warmth" advantage.

Asset N°2: the fleece is very soft to the touch.

Polar fleece is also known and highly appreciated for its softness. Indeed, during its manufacture, the fleece is scraped which gives it this fluffy aspect, so soft to the touch. This softness is an additional asset for all fleece clothing, particularly important for those that are in direct contact with the skin: fleece pants, fleece pyjamas, scarves or winter gloves.

Asset N°3: fleece is a breathable material

More breathable than traditional polyester fibres, fleece is often used in the manufacture of clothing dedicated to sports and outdoor activities. The thinner the fleece is, the more important it is in terms of moisture wicking. Therefore, the most breathable fleeces and therefore the most suitable for intense sports are not the same as those recommended for daily use.

Advantage N°4 : the fleece is very easy to maintain.

Fleece is a hard-wearing and easy-going textile! It can be machine washed without any problems, dries quickly even in winter and does not need to be ironed. It couldn't be more practical!

Asset N°5: fleece offers an excellent quality/price ratio

Last asset also explaining its immense success; its price! Indeed, fleece clothing - which is highly insulating and therefore warm, soft and breathable, practical and easy to care for - remains very affordable. And that too counts!

And it can also be an element of style especially with Protest fashion fleeces!
