Julbo and his athletes: Yannick Lord.

Yannick Seigneur (1941-2001) a technical advisor at the top. Julbo and his athletes. APRIL 2017 Julbo is proud today to bring together in its team world-renowned athletes in all the major disciplines of outdoor sports(Martin Fourcade - Biathlon, Fabien Barel - Mountain biking, Franck Cammas - Sailing...). The privileged relationship maintained with these athletes is one of the major development axes of the brand. Back to the origins with Yannick Seigneur, the first technical adviser Julbo.

Yannick Seigneur was the first Frenchman to climb three "8000" (summits over 8000 meters high) and is considered one of the most gifted guides of his generation.

He climbed Makalu in 1971 by the west pillar, a first. This ascent is undoubtedly one of his greatest achievements. He regularly returns to the Himalayas to lead expeditions. What interests him, and what makes his singularity, is the alpine style he imposes on himself and the difficulty of the routes he chooses. There is no question for him to take the normal route or to make a summit just to fill the "hunting table".

With his engineering training at the INSA in Lyon, Yannick Seigneur brings field and technical feedback on products. This collaboration, between a mountaineer and a brand, sets for Julbo the milestones of its development based on the use of its products in extreme environments. Athletes' feedback is invaluable for the Jura brand. But at the time, it was rare to find sportsmen and women who were entirely dedicated to their passion and who could therefore be available to develop and test products.

In the 1970s, the first "pro-model" in the name of Yannick Seigneur appeared. The round shape of the glasses of the 50s was revised in favour of a bigger, more enveloping glass. The appearance of an adjustable nose support and straight but curved temples provide better support. The lenses are mirrored to increase protection especially in cases of strong reverberation (snow, ice, high altitude, etc.). They are also optically reworked to avoid image distortion.

These technical features, which have become commonplace today, were, at the time, something relatively new. It was necessary for men to tackle the mountains and to discover all the dangers they pose to their eyesight (snow ophthalmia, erythropsia, white out syndrome) in order to be offered suitable protection. Yannick Seigneur was the first athlete Julbo and paved the way for other great names inmountaineering and climbing of yesterday and today such as Eric Escoffier, Catherine Destivelle, Patrick Gabarrou, Ueli Steck, Hervé Barmasse, Michi Wohlleben, Christophe Dumarest.
