How to make the right choice of sleeping bag / comforter?

When you're trekking, camping or sleeping under the stars, a sleeping bag is an essential piece of equipment. To help you make the right choice, here are the key elements of a quality sleeping bag that will meet your specific needs. At Alpinstore, we offer a selection of the best sleeping bags for men, models specially designed for women, as well as sleeping bags suitable for toddlers.

Weight

It's essential to consider the weight of the sleeping bag when choosing a model. If you're planning to hike and wear your sleeping bag all day, it's important that it's lightweight and compressible. However, if you're going on a road trip or camping trip where you won't have to carry the sleeping bag, weight isn't a decisive criterion, and you can prioritize comfort and warmth.

Temperature

It's important to note that sleeping bags designed for lower comfort temperatures will generally be heavier due to their extra insulation.

Comfort temperature is a key consideration when buying a sleeping bag. Each sleeping bag comes with three temperatures: comfort, limit and extreme.
  • The comfort temperature indicates the temperature at which a person is comfortable and does not feel the cold in their sleeping bag.

  • The comfort limit temperature indicates the temperature at which a person must curl up to avoid feeling the cold.

  • The extreme temperature indicates the temperature at which a person is likely to feel the cold in their sleeping bag, and may run the risk of hypothermia.

It's advisable to focus on the comfort temperature when making your purchase, as it's the closest to your comfort and guarantees a good night's sleep outdoors. If you're sensitive to the cold, it's advisable to opt for a sleeping bag with a comfort temperature slightly higher than the temperatures you expect to face.

To choose the right sleeping bag, especially if you're going trekking, it's important to take into account the geographical area of your hike, the altitudes where you'll be sleeping, the season and the weather conditions. This will enable you to determine the comfort temperature required for your sleeping bag. Then you can choose from our selection of quality sleeping bags.

Which filling to choose?

The type of filling in your sleeping bag can also play a decisive role in your choice. For similar temperatures, a synthetic filling is generally heavier and less compressible than down, but offers better moisture resistance. Thus, a synthetic sleeping bag is recommended for sleeping under the stars, for bivouacking in damp areas or if you're planning to face inclement weather.

Down sleeping bags, on the other hand, are often lighter, more compressible, insulating and breathable. However, in damp conditions, down can lose its insulating properties, although some down sleeping bags are treated to resist moisture. Down is therefore ideal for those looking for a warm, lightweight sleeping bag.

It's therefore important to consider the expected weather conditions and your sensitivity to humidity when choosing the filling for your sleeping bag. If you plan to venture into damp environments or want a versatile, moisture-resistant sleeping bag, synthetic fill may be a good choice. If you're looking for lightness, compressibility and maximum insulation, down may be preferable.

Shape matters!

There are two types of sleeping bag shape:
  • The sarcophagus sleeping bag is designed to optimize thermal protection by conforming to the shape of your body. It's often lighter and more compact, making it a preferred choice for trekking activities where weight and space are important.

  • The rectangular sleeping bag, or blanket sleeping bag, offers more space and comfort, especially for the feet. However, because of its wider shape, it offers less effective thermal protection, as there is more air inside the bag. These bags are therefore generally recommended for summer or spring camping, when temperatures are milder.

It's important to choose the sleeping bag shape that best suits your needs and camping style. If you prefer lightness and thermal efficiency, the sarcophagus sleeping bag is the ideal choice. If you prefer more space and comfort, even at the expense of thermal protection, the rectangular sleeping bag may be an interesting option.

A few tips

Tooptimize your comfort and ensure a restful night's sleep, here are a few recommendations to bear in mind:
  • Avoid layering too many items of clothing inside your sleeping bag. In cold weather, leggings and a warm long-sleeved top should suffice.

  • Protect your extremities by wearing a hat, gloves and socks when temperatures are low.

  • Make sure you have good insulation between the ground and your sleeping bag by using a suitable camping mattress to protect you from the cold coming from the ground.

  • If your sleeping bag gets wet, ventilate and dry it as quickly as possible to avoid losing its insulating properties.

  • For added comfort and/or warmth, consideradding a sleeping bag sheet, ideally made of silk, to increase thermal insulation.

  • If you have a down sleeping bag, it's best to store it at home, out of its compression cover, to preserve its loft.

  • When washing your sleeping bag, follow the manufacturer's instructions, usually printed on the bag's label. Most sleeping bags can be machine-washed on cold, but it's important to follow the specific instructions.
