How to choose the right stove?

The gas stove

The gas stove is a reliable and easy-to-use choice for cooking. It uses a mixture of pressurized liquid gases, such as propane, butane or isobutane, to operate. Gas stoves offer high efficiency and precise flame adjustment. What's more, they are the lightest and most compact heating tools available on the market.

However, there are a few drawbacks to using gas. Depending on your location, it can sometimes be difficult to find the right gas cartridge for your stove. We recommend choosing a stove that uses the international standard of threaded valve cartridges, such as those made by Coleman, Primus, Msr, Optimus or Jetboil.

Valve cartridges (with screw thread) have the advantage of being able to be safely disconnected and reconnected, even when full. In France, CampinGaz offers pierceable cartridges and valve cartridges without thread, which are not compatible with stoves using a screw thread (valve). In this case, an adapter is required. Outside France, it can be difficult to find these pierceable cartridges. To remedy this problem, some manufacturers offer so-called "Duo" stoves that are compatible with both threaded and non-threaded valve gas cartridges.

Pressurized gas has difficulty withstanding the cold. Butane quickly becomes unusable at sub-zero temperatures. In this case, it's necessary to heat up the cartridge so that the butane can vaporize again. To overcome this disadvantage, it is preferable to use a gas cylinder containing a mixture of propane and isopropane in cold environments. For use in winter or at low temperatures, we recommend the use of an inverted cartridge stove.

A new generation of optimized stoves is now available. These stoves offer high efficiency and can be used in difficult weather conditions. They consist of a burner, a heat diffuser, a pan and a lid. These 2-in-1 stoves (stove + saucepan) save energy by reducing boiling or cooking times.

The multi-fuel stove

One of the advantages of a liquid-fuel stove is the ease with which you can find gasoline, kerosene or diesel anywhere in the world. The operation of this type of stove is simple: by activating a pump, the liquid fuel is pressurized, then passes through the burner where it is transformed into a gaseous state under the effect of heat.

There are two types of liquid-fuel stoves:
  1. Multifuel stoves, also known as "gasoline" stoves, which run on white gasoline (C-gasoline), unleaded gasoline (95, 98), kerosene and diesel/diesel.
  2. Multi-fuel stoves that run on both liquid fuel (C-gasoline, unleaded, etc.) and can also be used with threaded-valve gas cartridges (e.g. Primus Omnilite).
The gasoline or multi-fuel stove can be used in any temperature. It offers high efficiency, even in cold weather, making it the preferred choice for expeditions to polar regions and high mountains. It is also ideal for long-distance travel.

However, the use of a gasoline stove is more complex than that of other systems. It requires special attention: before it can be used at full power, it must be preheated. It also requires regular cleaning and light maintenance.

The supply of liquid fuel is easy and inexpensive. It is considerably more economical than gas, although the stove itself is more expensive to buy.

It's important to store liquid fuel separately from the stove, in a bottle specially designed for transporting flammable liquids. Unlike gas, liquid fuel is not under pressure when stored.

Gasoline C is the cleanest liquid fuel on the market, leaving no residue. It therefore clogs gasoline stoves less. It's the ideal fuel for extremely cold conditions and high-altitude expeditions. Wherever possible, we recommend using this fuel!

The wood stove

Wood is a free and abundant natural resource! There's no need to transport it, as it can be collected directly at the site of the fire. The user is therefore totally autonomous and avoids unnecessary burdens.

However, the use of a wood-burning stove requires the collection of kindling and constant maintenance of the fire. Lighting the fire may require a certain technique, especially when the wood is damp. This type of stove is not suitable for use in wood-free regions, such as glacial zones, deserts and high mountains. What's more, when using a wood-burning stove, it's best to use a popote that can be easily cleaned, as cooking with wood can lead to soot deposits on the pan.

Some stoves feature a double-wall design to optimize heat transfer and increase efficiency.

Many wood-burning stoves are compatible with other types of fuel. If wood is in short supply, it can be replaced by solid or liquid alcohol. For example, a Trangia or Tatonka alcohol burner can be installed in the firebox of the Firebox wood-burning stove. This stove also works with solid alcohol such as Esbit.

Care must be taken when using a wood-burning stove. It should not be used in fire-sensitive areas.

The alcohol stove

The alcohol stove is undoubtedly the simplest system to use. There are three types of alcohol stove: liquid alcohol (such as methylated spirits), solid alcohol (in tablet form) and alcohol gel.

Easy to handle, they require no special maintenance. Alcohol is a fuel readily available worldwide. These stoves are very popular in Scandinavian countries, and offer many advantages: they are very light and inexpensive. In terms of purchase and use, alcohol stoves are more economical than gasoline or gas-powered systems. Alcohol does not freeze, but it does require preheating in sub-zero temperatures.

Alcohol generally takes longer to boil than other fuels, and flame control is less precise.

Many alcohol stoves are sold as kits, including the burner, an integrated windscreen and a popote.
