Mulesing is a painful surgical procedure involving the removal of shreds of flesh and skin from the perianal area of merino sheep, with the aim of protecting them from infection caused by attacks from flies that lay their eggs there. This practice is carried out without anaesthetic or antibiotic treatment, and does not always guarantee effective protection of the animals against infection. In fact, it can be so invasive that it can lead to the death of the sheep. With animal welfare in mind, the Karpos brand has chosen to use a wool yarn that may be more expensive, but is also more respectful of animals, thus firmly opposing the practice of mulesing.
