Norwegian Getaway - Tromsø and surroundings

Norwegian Getaway - Tromsø and surroundings

Because the Mediterranean Sea is good but the Norwegian Sea is better ;)

Adept of nature, quietness and looking for a new destination for your summer/autumn holidays: The Norwegian holiday resort is made for you.

Who has never dreamed of being alone in the middle of an idyllic landscape in the middle of August?

Through these few lines, I hope to make you want to set off on an adventure north of the Arctic Circle...

Tromsø: A modern city that combines nature and culture

Tromsø is today the largest urban centre in Northern Norway.

Both a multicultural city and historically the starting point for expeditions to the North Pole, it is a "good place to live" and where the predominant nature quickly transports us to holiday resorts.

Among the places not to be missed

Lake Prestvatnet:

Only 30 minutes walk from the city centre, it is the ideal place for nature lovers.

There is a trail "prized by running enthusiasts" that allows you to walk around the lake and observe many species of birds.

On the way to the lake from the city centre, you can discover many houses with typical Scandinavian colourful facades.

Fjellheisen:

Accessible by cable car, the Fjellheisen is 420 meters above sea level and offers a magnificent panorama of the city of Tromsø.

Also accessible by hiking via stairs recently built by Nepalese sherpas (between 2016 and 2019), you will also find rest areas and great views along the way.

The Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø :

Built in 1965 and considered the city's landmark, it is Norway's only wooden cathedral and owes its name to the fact that it is located above the Arctic Circle. With no less than 500 concerts a year, including the famous midnight concerts (NOK 180), it is also possible to visit it during the day for NOK 50.

Ersjfordbotn: Waterfalls, wellness and delicacy

Only 15 km from Tromsø city centre (accessible by bus), this little piece of paradise is ideal for a stroll by the water and listen to the birdsong in peace and quiet.

(You can also admire the beautiful waterfalls).

For those with a sweet tooth, I recommend a short stop at the "café Bryggejentene" where you can taste delicious pastries while enjoying the terrace with sea view.

For the amateurs of Scandinavian decoration, you will certainly find a Norwegian souvenir which will come to embellish your interiors.

Sommarøy: An island out of time

Sommarøy : Une île hors du temps

Leaving Tromsø, after a good hour's drive along the sea through the fjords, it is with wonder that we discover this island. Between the white sandy beach, the emerald sea and the charm of the Scandinavian houses maintained to perfection: only your eyes remain to admire.

Sommarøy

To know more..: The island of Sommarøy because of its location close to the Arctic Circle is deprived of the sun from November to January and lives an average of 70 days a year without seeing the sunset. Moreover, a petition has recently been handed over to a member of parliament because the island wishes to have no more time zones; the idea being to free itself from the opening hours of traditional shops and to have flexibility for school and working hours. (This measure would only concern the summer period).

Finally, from my point of view, Northern Norway remains the nature destination par excellence.

You can quickly find yourself alone in the middle of nowhere listening to the silence and observing the wildlife: You won't be safe from meeting reindeer or elk at the bend in the road or even on the side of the road.
