Stéphane Brogniart: a new record on the Grande Traversée du Mercantour

Stéphane Brogniart: a new record on the Grande Traversée du Mercantour

The ultra-trailer Vosges has just completed this Sunday, September 23 at 17:13 on the beach of Menton the great crossing of the Mercantour, he had started Friday 21 at 17:42 in Estenc. He covered 220 km for more than 12,000 meters of vertical gain in a final time of 47h31.

A record without course recognition

Behind the pure performance, adventure was the watchword of this challenge: Stéphane Brogniart was playing on a terrain he hadn' t recognised beforehand. Finding the right itinerary was therefore a permanent challenge on this kind of well-preserved track in the Mercantour National Park. For example, there were several light outings on the route, notably during the two nights of running in the light of head-on.

In the end, he will have covered 220 km with more than 12,000 positive altitude differences, a little more than the 212 km announced. The average time taken by hikers to cover this route is 16 days! No official record had previously been set on this route of the Grande Traversée du Mercantour, which was made official by the Alpes-Maritimes Departmental Council in 2016.

"I'll remember this challenge."

After the Crossing of the Vosges (video) and the Jura (video)The Grande Traversée Mercantour represented a higher level of difficulty, as the new course record holder says: "It was very beautiful and very technical. The part of the Vallée des Merveilles was the most difficult. From the rocks as far as the eye could see, it took us 8h30 to do 28 km, an eternity! I will remember this route and this challenge for a long time."

The goal was to share this challenge as much as possible. First of all with his support team, his family, his loyal partners, but also with traileurs delighted to join him on sections via an invitation on social networks. A success since he was accompanied from start to finish.

An XL challenge to prepare for the crossing of the Pacific Ocean in a rowing boat.

The notion of adventure is not insignificant: Stéphane Brogniart is preparing to row across the Pacific Ocean in 2023. These challenges are preparing him for this attempt never made before within his project ETARCOS. He will then be in the total unknown and will have to deal with new situations all the time. It is exactly this notion of the unknown that he has come to seek in this Great Mercantour Crossing. With success.
