Test of SCARPA trail shoes: feedback

On Thursday, July 5, 2018, we were 16, accompanied by athlete Yann Heusey from the SCARPA team, gathered for the SCARPA Vertical Series in Annecy. We are a team of enthusiasts, we speak frankly: we test on the field, we scrape the sole, and we tell you what works. This event allowed us to test several pairs in real conditions. Want the concrete? Here are our impressions, technical and honest, to help you choose well.

We start by presenting two flagship models that we scrutinized: the SPIN and the NEUTRON. I took notes on weight, drop, grip, and behavior on the trail. The terrain: steep sections, rocks, technical single track, small grassy portions, and accelerations on dry trails. The feedback comes from runners of different levels, tested on short and long outings.

SPIN: lightness and precision

The SPIN SCARPA is made for speed on short distances. It weighs 250 grams in size 42, has a drop of 6 mm, and features a Vibram sole. On the ground, it is a precise and stable shoe, designed for runners who want to feel the ground without losing agility. If you run short and technical, the SPIN provides remarkable grip and good acceleration. We liked the responsiveness and low inertia with each stride.

Pierre, a regular trail runner, notes minimal protection underfoot: a feeling of proximity to the terrain. If you want generous cushioning, this is not your choice. Ludovic, an experienced runner, mentions a minimalist design that grips very well on dry terrain. Also available in a women's version, it retains the same dynamic qualities.

  • weight: 250 g (42)
  • drop: 6 mm
  • sole: Vibram

To complete your running gear without overloading, also remember to check your trail pole equipment before heading into technical terrain: they change the game on long and technical climbs and pair well with shoes that prioritize lightness.

NEUTRON: endurance and rebound

The NEUTRON SCARPA is designed for competition over medium and long distances. Its TPU chassis reduces torsion, improves stability, and, thanks to the XRS (extra rebound system), offers a noticeable energy return for efficient rolling. Weight: 335 grams in 42, drop 6 mm, and Vibram MegaGrip sole ensuring grip and durability.

Jean, an occasional runner, describes a shoe that holds the foot well and gives the impression of rebounding with each stride. Marine, a trail enthusiast, highlights the cushioning suited for long outings and the sole that maintains traction even when the pace picks up. The NEUTRON is a shoe that reassures over distance.

  • weight: 335 g (42)
  • drop: 6 mm
  • cushioning: dynamic

If you are looking for high-performance outdoor shoes for various terrains, the NEUTRON is a serious option: stability and energy return allow you to maintain a good pace without crushing your stride. We encourage you to test in-store if possible, but our field sessions confirm the versatility of the model.

At AlpinStore, we also build advice to help you pack your bag: choosing your trail gear depends on your profile, duration, and terrain. We guide you on shoe fitting, drop choice, the importance of the sole, and protection against early rain or mud.

For those looking for economical solutions, we regularly offer deals on trail gear at the best price: shoe + accessory packs, and advice to optimize your budget without sacrificing performance. We know that a good weight/grip ratio is often more useful than useless gadgets.

Our team rigorously tests and selects products: our selection of trail shoes is based on measurable criteria and field feedback. We don’t sell dreams: we explain who each pair is made for, and we give you clear references. Technical runners, ultratrailers, occasional trail runners: everyone will find precise references with us.

On equipment choice, we think practically: also consider a high-performance trail headlamp if you do night outings or early morning starts. Lighting changes your perception of the terrain and reduces the risk of twisting your foot on unexpected sections.

Want high-performance trail shoes without breaking the bank? Check out our section where we highlight tested gear and offers: trail gear at the best price, but also advice to extend the life of your shoes and improve sole repairs or water protection.

How to choose between SPIN and NEUTRON? We suggest a quick test in your head: if you do short and explosive outings, take the SPIN. If you do medium to long distances with a need for reactive cushioning, the NEUTRON will give you stability and endurance. To help you further: our team can advise you in-store or by phone to refine the size and type of sole according to your usual terrain.

Finally, some practical tips: pay attention to maintenance, alternate shoes to prolong the soles, and consider adjusting your socks according to the season. If you want to optimize your purchase, compare our offers and read feedback from other runners: real user reviews always complement field tests. And if you want to go further in composing your outfit, also explore our selection of trail gear at the best price to effectively complete your set.

We leave you with our enthusiasm: we love testing, we love running, we love sharing. SCARPA provides us with technical models, and we accompany you to make your outings smoother, faster, and above all more fun. Want us to help you choose? We are here, no bullshit, among climbing buddies.
