Which pair of glasses for which sport?

Which pair of glasses for which sport?

More than 70% of our movements are guided by our sight. A sunglass is therefore much more than just a fashion accessory but a performance aid. The two essential elements to choose your sunglasses are the frame and the sunglasses: two inseparable elements for a perfect combination.

THE HIGH MOUNTAINS: SKIING, HIKING, TREKKING, MOUNTAINEERING

MOUNTING

We strongly recommend that you choose a frame that is as enveloping as possible, with shells to block the side rays of the sun, wind, cold or snow... It is also important to choose straight temples, so that they slide easily under a helmet, cap, or adjustable temples for an optimal fit.

SUNGLASSES

The higher the altitude, the more harmful the sun's rays are, so it is essential to have good sun protection.

We recommend the Reactiv photochromic lenses:

  • Cameleon : photochromic and polarizing glass of cat. 2 to 4 (visible light transmission rate 5-20%). In addition to darkening and brightening depending on the ambient light, it suppresses reverberations on reflective surfaces. Its brown colour provides excellent perception of the surface on snow and improves contrast.
  • Zebra: photochromic glass cat. 2 to 4 (7-35%). Its yellow colour increases brightness and provides excellent depth perception. It is clearer, brighter and has a wider photochromic range than Cameleon.

MOUNTING

Above all, you should opt for a light frame so that you can forget about it during your long outings. We also advise you to choose thin or adjustable temples to easily slide your frame under your helmet or cap. Also opt for tips on the non-slip temples and an adjustable nose to ensure maximum support despite speed and steep terrain. Ventilation of your frame is also an important consideration to avoid fogging.

SUNGLASSES

These sports are practiced on various terrains, going from plain to undergrowth, so we can strongly recommend a photochromic glass that will adapt to these changes in light variations. At Julbo, there are different types of protection, depending on your usage:

  • by strong sunlight on cloudy days: Zebra cat. 2 to 4 (visible light transmission rate 7 to 35%)
  • from sunny to overcast or from dawn to dusk: zebra light cat. 1 to 3 (17 to 75%) or zebra light Red cat. 1 to 3 (13 to 72%)
You can also opt for a cat. 3 polycarbonate lens, which is very versatile in its use (Spectron 3).

WATER SPORTS: SAILING, KITESURFING, STAND UP PADDLE

MOUNTING

We recommend a soft, wrap-around frame to avoid water splashes but with good ventilation to prevent fogging: hanging or perforated lenses. There are also floating goggles, an interesting criterion for all sports near water where you can easily reach out your hand to retrieve your glasses if necessary.

SUNGLASSES

At the seaside or on the water, we strongly advise you to choose polarized lenses. They allow you to suppress the sun's reflection on reflective surfaces and will thus allow you to have a clear vision of the horizon without any parasitic reflections and to clearly distinguish the wind from the waves. The disadvantage is to read your navigation screens, but if they are indoors, you will have to remove your glasses anyway!

Once again, photochromic lenses offer undeniable vision comfort whatever the weather. We therefore recommend the Reactiv Octopus lens (cat. 2 to 4) which is also polarizing and has been specially developed for all water sports.

Then, for budget or versatility reasons, the polycarbonate cat. 3(Polarized 3) is also a very good option.
