Part 1 — Men's Clothing

Alpinstore Return Prevention Tips — Ortovox Textiles

  • Chest measurement priority for tops : if your measurements correspond to two different sizes, use the chest measurement for jackets, sweaters, and t-shirts, and the hip measurement for pants and shorts.
  • SWISSWOOL™ merino wool : Ortovox merino pieces (technical underwear, t-shirts, mid-layers) tend to slightly shrink after the first wash. Always wash at a maximum of 30°C on a delicate cycle before fully recovering the shape. If in doubt between two sizes for merino, take the larger size.
  • Hardshell and softshell : for a jacket intended to be worn with multiple layers underneath (mid-layer + base layer), stick to your usual size. Ortovox cuts include sufficient mobility allowance.
  • If in doubt between two sizes : prefer the larger size for a loose fit (layering) or the smaller size for an athletic fit close to the body.

1. How to Measure for Clothing

Chest Measurement

Measure horizontally at the point where the chest is most prominent, under the arms. Tape measure horizontal, neither too tight nor too loose.

Waist Measurement

Measure horizontally at the narrowest part of the body, usually at the navel.

Hip Measurement

Measure horizontally at the point where the hips are widest, legs together.

Inseam Measurement

Standing, measure the distance from the crotch to the floor (without shoes). Useful for pants.

Part 2 — Women's Clothing

Alpinstore Return Prevention Tips — Ortovox Women's Clothing

  • Women's specific cut : Ortovox women's clothing is designed with a fit tailored to female body shapes (defined waist, narrower shoulders). Do not compensate by taking a smaller men's model.
  • Merino base layers : Ortovox merino base layers are worn directly against the skin. Take your usual size — they adapt perfectly to the body shape after a few uses.
  • Chest measurement priority for tops, hip measurement for bottoms. If in doubt, take the larger size.

Part 3 — Backpacks

Alpinstore Return Prevention Tips — Ortovox Backpacks

  • Back length is the key measurement : Ortovox sizes its backpacks according to back length (not volume or your general size). A backpack poorly adapted to your back length will reduce load transfer to the hips and cause pain even on short outings.
  • S bags (Short) : Ortovox offers many models in S (Short) version for body shapes with a short back length (often women, but not exclusively). Standard models are suitable for long backs.
  • AVABAG (airbag) : the airbag size follows the same rules as classic backpacks. Check the compatibility of the LiTRIC (rechargeable) or ZERO module with your model before purchase. The modules are not interchangeable between all generations.
  • Merino wool in the back panel : the SWISSWOOL™ wool back panel is an Ortovox specificity — it improves ventilation and carrying comfort. Its maintenance follows the same rules as merino clothing (wash at a maximum of 30°C, dry flat).

4. How to Measure Your Back Length

Official Ortovox Method

  1. Stand up, back straight.
  2. Place the tape at the top of the hip bone (iliac crest).
  3. Raise the tape along the back to the 7th cervical vertebra (the vertebra that protrudes at the base of the neck when you tilt your head).
  4. This distance in cm = your back length.

Practical Tips

Get help from another person for an accurate measurement. Wear the loaded backpack during your first fitting to ensure the lumbar belt rests well on the hips and the straps fit the shoulders without creating tension in the neck.

S bags (Short) have a shortened carrying system of about 4–5 cm compared to standard versions.

5. Ortovox Backpack Size Chart

Source: official Ortovox guide (ortovox.com/ch-fr/support/guide-de-taille). Back length determines the size of the carrying system, regardless of the volume of the backpack.

Important : Ortovox backpacks generally include an adjustable back length within a range of ± 3–5 cm around the standard size. Check the adjustment range on the product sheet. If your back length is at the limit between two sizes, try both before deciding.

Part 4 — Accessories: Gloves & Others

Alpinstore Return Prevention Tips — Ortovox Gloves

  • Measure hand circumference : wrap the tape around the hand without tightening, in the middle of the palm, at its widest point, without the thumb. This measurement in cm directly determines your size.
  • Merino leather gloves : Ortovox gloves (Tour Glove, Freeride, Swisswool) made from cowhide or merino soften with use and perfectly fit the shape of the hand after a few outings. A slight tightness is normal upon first wear.
  • If in doubt between two sizes : if you wear liners underneath, go up a size. Otherwise, take your strict size for good dexterity.

Part 5 — Ortovox Size Guide FAQ

How does Ortovox sizing compare to other outdoor brands?

Ortovox follows classic European standards. Pure merino wool garments tend to be slightly more fitted than synthetic pieces. For technical pieces (hardshell, softshell), the cuts include sufficient mobility allowance for layering. If in doubt, take the larger size.

Can I machine wash my Ortovox merino wool clothing?

Yes, but at a maximum of 30°C on a delicate or wool cycle. Use a special wool detergent (without softener). Do not twist — dry flat. Avoid the tumble dryer. A slight shrinkage is possible if these instructions are not followed, hence the interest in taking a size up if in doubt.

How to choose between a standard Ortovox backpack and an S (Short) version?

The S version has a shortened carrying system of 4 to 5 cm. Measure your back length (iliac crest → 7th cervical vertebra). If your back length is less than 46 cm, opt for the S version. Between 46 and 52 cm, the standard version is suitable. Beyond that, look for an L version if available. Women often (but not always) have a shorter back — measure before assuming.

What is the difference between the AVABAG LiTRIC airbag and AVABAG ZERO?

The LiTRIC system is rechargeable via USB — ideal for regular users who go out several times a week. The ZERO system uses a compressed cartridge to be replaced after each deployment — ultra-light, recommended if weight is a priority or for less frequent outings. The two systems are not interchangeable with each other or with older generations. Check compatibility on the product sheet before purchase.
