Gregory Size Guide — Hiking & Trekking Backpacks

Founded in 1977 in Salt Lake City (Utah, United States) by Wayne Gregory, the brand is a pioneer of the ergonomic suspension system adapted to body morphology. Gregory specializes exclusively in backpacks: day hiking, trekking, mountaineering, and urban. The range covers men's packs (Zulu, Arrio, Paragon, Baltoro) and women's packs (Jade, Deva, Maven, Amber), all sized according to torso length. This guide helps you find the right size before ordering on Alpinstore.

Alpinstore Return Prevention Tips — Gregory Backpacks

  • The torso length is the only measurement that matters : Gregory does not size its packs based on your general height but only on your torso length (C7 → iliac crest). Measure it before ordering.
  • Same size chart for Men and Women : Gregory officially states — "a medium is a medium, whether it is a men's, women's, or unisex pack." What differs between the men's and women's ranges is the shape of the straps and the cut of the hipbelt, not the torso length ranges.
  • Double sizes (SM/MD, MD/LG) : many Gregory packs are available in a "double size" version with a continuous torso length adjustment of 9 cm (3.5 inches). E.g.: SM/MD covers 38–48 cm.
  • Hipbelt : the hipbelt is ordered and adjusted separately from the pack size on some models. Measure your hip circumference above the iliac crest.
  • If in doubt between two sizes : choose the larger size. You can adjust the length downwards.

Part 1 — Measure and Choose Your Gregory Size

1. How to Measure Your Torso Length — Official Gregory Method

The 4 Gregory Steps

  1. Tilt your head down to highlight the 7th cervical vertebra (C7) — the most prominent bump at the base of your neck.
  2. Place the end of the measuring tape at this point.
  3. Lift your head and slide the tape down your spine to the iliac crest (the top of the hip bone, on the side of the spine).
  4. Read the measurement: this is your torso length.

Important Points

  • Get help from another person for more accuracy.
  • Torso length is different from general height. Two people of the same stature can have very different torsos.
  • Measure while standing, back straight, not bent.
  • If your measurement is on the border between two sizes, choose the larger size.

2. Official Gregory Torso Length Chart

Source: gregory.com/fit-guide (official). Same chart valid for Men's and Women's packs. Women's ranges have adapted straps and belts but the torso length ranges are identical.

LG48 – 53 cm19 – 21”Long back. Tall men, athletic morphology.Zulu, Arrio, Paragon, Baltoro
Double sizes with continuous adjustment : many Gregory packs offer a double size (SM/MD or MD/LG) with a continuous torso length adjustment system of 9 cm. E.g.: SM/MD covers 38–48 cm. MD/LG covers 43–53 cm. If you are on the border between SM and MD, the SM/MD pack is perfect for you. Source: official gregory.com, Next Adventure.

3. Hipbelt — Separate Measurement

The Gregory hipbelt is sized separately from the torso. It should rest 2–3 cm above the iliac crest. Measure your hip circumference at the hip bone level.

Hipbelt SizeHip Circumference (cm)Hip Circumference (inches)Note
XS63 – 84 cm25 – 33”Close to the body, fine adjustment
SM71 – 97 cm28 – 38”Standard small belt
MD84 – 112 cm33 – 44”Standard belt — the most common
LG97 – 127 cm38 – 50”Large belt, strong build

On some Gregory models, the hipbelt is replaceable. Most packs include an MD belt by default. Source: official gregory.com/fit-guide.

Part 3 — Women's Ranges Gregory

6. Women's Backpacks Gregory — Jade, Deva, Maven, Amber

Reminder : same torso length chart for women's ranges. What differs: women's straps have an S-shape to contour the chest, the hipbelt is reduced at the waist and wider at the hips, and the length of the back of the pack is slightly reduced. Gregory recommends women start with size SM if their torso length is at the SM/MD limit.

7. FAQ — Gregory Size Guide

What is the difference between torso length and general height ?

General height is the distance from the ground to the head. Torso length is the distance from the 7th cervical vertebra to the iliac crest — that is, the length of your back between the neck and the hip. These two measurements are not proportional: a tall person can have a short torso, and vice versa. Gregory sizes its packs solely based on torso length.

Is the size really the same between men's and women's Gregory packs ?

Yes — Gregory officially states: the torso length ranges are identical. A women's SM corresponds to the same cm of torso as a men's SM. What differs is the design of the straps (S-shape to contour the chest), the hipbelt (narrower at the waist, wider at the hips), and the slightly reduced height of the back of the pack on women's ranges.

How to adjust your Gregory pack once received ?

Load the pack with your usual equipment. Loosen all straps. Put the pack on your back and buckle the hipbelt first — the top edge of the belt should be 2–3 cm above the hip bone. Adjust the torso length if your pack allows (adjustable system). Tighten the straps so they hug your shoulders. The load straps (at the top of the straps) bring the load closer to your back — pull at 45°. The chest strap stabilizes the straps.

What is the difference between the Zulu and Paragon Gregory ?

The Zulu (25–35 L) uses the FreeFloat Dynamic system with suspended trampoline mesh — maximum ventilation, day hiking. The Paragon (48–68 L) uses the FreeFloat Hybrid with back contact — better load transfer for multi-day outings with heavy loads. The Paragon also includes a raincover and a sleeping bag compartment.

What is the AutoCant hipbelt on the Baltoro and Deva ?

The AutoCant is Gregory's patented hipbelt that pivots independently on 3 axes (up/down, left/right, rotation). It follows the natural movements of your hips while walking without creating friction. This is the main advantage of the Baltoro and Deva for long heavy outings — the belt always stays well positioned without needing to be adjusted along the way.
