HOW IS THE PATAGONIA TORRENTSHELL JACKET MADE?

fair trade patagonia

The jacket is Fair Trade certified. For Patagonia, this is the first step towards fairer remuneration for its partners in the supply chain. This label offers workers in the textile industry benefits and a decent wage, which is not necessarily the case in this industry.

The jacket is also made of recycled nylon from post-industrial waste, yarn collected from a spinning mill and weaving mill waste. Nylon is one of the strongest and ultra-lightest plastics, which is why Patagonia needs it to manufacture technical products and maintain its performance standards. 81% recycled nylon is used in the manufacture of Patagonia garments and the brand continues to reduce its dependence on oil as a raw material.

The H2No™ performance standard is Patagonia's benchmark for waterproofing, breathability and durability of clothing. Covered by the Ironclad Patagonia Warranty, products that meet the H2No Performance Standard provide the highest level of durable waterproof protection.

The jacket has a fluorinated DWR primer, which allows the waterproof jacket to wick away moisture. It is a durable water repellent (DWR) that prevents the clothing from becoming waterlogged. DWR Primer is a functional chemical coating containing PFCs (perfluorocarbons), which have long been used by the outdoor industry to make waterproof clothing. However, these are non-biodegradable chemicals that are harmful to the environment. PFCs are extremely effective at repelling water, but because of their impact, Patagonia is working to eliminate them completely from the clothing the brand produces. Patagonia is working on this finish to be PFC-free by the fall of 2022.

bluesign® works in the textile supply chain to certify that chemicals, processes, materials and products are safe for the environment, workers and consumers.
