For over five generations, Tarrerias-Bonjean has been perpetuating the tradition and know-how of fine cutlery in Thiers, France. Proud of our heritage as a supplier of excellence to the French Army, we embody a commitment to quality, technicality and robustness, reflecting our passion for the products that accompany the military in their mission of defense.
At the time, professional photographers were scouring France to capture images of traditional trades, towns and villages, and tourist sites, creating postcards, the main souvenirs of travel at the time. The 1919 photograph taken in our workshop, known as a "rouet", in the village of Moulin Neuf, on the banks of the Durolle river, is the earliest visual record of our history.
The "master grinders" perform the grinding operation by hand, beveling the blades by rubbing against huge stone millstones, using the strength of their arms, aided by the weight of their upper bodies, driving the millstones with the motive power of the river's water. A small dog can be seen warming its master, while the central figure, JOSEPH TARRERIAS (8th generation cutler), is seated, and his wife, also a cutler, is in the doorway in the background. In the foreground, an 11-year-old girl, MARIE BONJEAN, is polishing by hand. In 1926, she married LUCIEN TARRERIAS, and together they founded the TARRERIAS-BONJEAN company, thus combining their family names. Their son, GEORGES TARRERIAS, married ANDREE BOUTERIGE in 1965, working together. The current directors, Carole and Eric TARRERIAS, represent the 11th generation of cutlers.
In 1995, Tarrerias-Bonjean began working with the French Army, developing tools specially designed for military use. The Bivouac®, launched in 1996, became an icon. Followed by the Baroudeur®, it accompanied soldiers until 2017, when the Protecteur® was launched for ALAT aircrew. In partnership with military expert Philippe PEROTTI, Tarrerias-Bonjean launched the C.A.C® (Combat Assistance Campagne) in 2017, selected by the French Ministry of Defense. Featuring robust mechanics, the C.A.C® will mark a milestone in the history of knives for the French armed forces.
