160 years of the Edelrid brand

For those who love vertical freedom, EDELRID has been manufacturing innovative climbing and mountaineering equipment for 160 years. What started with shoelaces, fishing lines, and strands of books has developed into a company that offers various products for mountaineering and industrial climbing equipment, supplying the entire world. This year, the company from Allgäu celebrates its 160 years and looks back on a tumultuous history, full of ups and downs.
"We wanted to know exactly where we came from", explains Vitus Wuhrer, managing director of EDELRID GmbH & Co. KG.
"Since we started exploring our history, more and more memories have come to us. Stories of people who have worked with us. Stories that move us and, above all, show how many people associate positive experiences with us. I am particularly happy to see that cohesion and family have always played a major role at EDELRID, from 1863 to today. We live the team of rope access technicians".

The company celebrates its anniversary with a large open house at its production site, as well as an exhibition at the museum in the town of Isny. But the true message goes far beyond regional borders:

Sharing the feeling of vertical freedom with all those who practice mountain sports, climbing, or bouldering. To do this, EDELRID invests in research and development, training and knowledge transfer, and of course in products that improve the quality of teaching and training and of course in products that safely accompany its users in verticality.

CLIMB GREEN: environmentally friendly climbing products

Under the label "#ClimbGreen", EDELRID distinguishes particularly environmentally friendly products. They are made from sustainable materials or stand out for their particularly long lifespan.

With the #ClimbGreen collection, EDELRID proves that the issue of sustainability can also be implemented consistently in the field of PPE without compromising on quality, safety, or performance. Special achievements include innovative products such as the recycled climbing rope NEO 3R 9.8 MM, which received the federal prize for ecodesign in Germany, non-anodized carabiners, or PFC-free climbing ropes that meet the requirements of the UIAA of the European Union with PFC-free products for water-repellent ropes.

"We love our sport, as well as the mountains, rivers, and forests that are an integral part of our lives." is the brand's mantra.

Edelrid develops equipment that we can all rely on to feel safe during our outings. The brand is aware of the ecological footprint of its products and their impact on man and nature.

EDELRID Zodiac 3R: The first recycled climbing helmet


With the Zodiac 3R, EDELRID launches the first recycled climbing helmet and proves once again that sustainability is also possible in safety equipment for climbing. Both the robust outer shell made of polyamide and the shock-absorbing inner shell made of EPS are made from recycled plastic. This allows for energy and resource savings and reduces greenhouse gases. Of course, the Zodiac 3R – like all EDELRID climbing helmets – reliably protects the head from impacts or falling rocks.

"Successfully closing the loop, that is, producing an important PPE product for safety from residues of another PPE product, is a great satisfaction – for the product developer, not from the perspective of sustainability, but rather because of the technological challenge it represents", says Philippe Westenberger, product manager at EDELRID.

The recycled Zodiac 3R is ideal for mountaineering, climbing, and via ferrata. The hybrid helmet protects the head from falling rocks and also offers, thanks to its full protection, protection in case of lateral collisions. For the robust outer shell made of polyamide, EDELRID uses recycled production scraps from its own rope factory. The EPS inner shell ensures optimal shock-absorbing properties and is made from recycled PET.

In terms of equipment, the Zodiac 3R meets all expectations. Its new design and optimized ventilation surfaces improve comfort and ensure continuous air circulation, which is particularly pleasant when outdoor temperatures are high. The Wing Fit system allows for quick adjustment, and the new chin strap buckle is also very easy to use. The inner padding is detachable and can be machine washed if necessary.
