Meindl and eco-responsibility: when tradition, quality, and sustainability move forward together

For over 300 years, Meindl has been designing hiking and mountain shoes by combining craft tradition and modern technology. Based in Kirchanschöring, Bavaria, the family business embodies a unique know-how, passed down from generation to generation. But Meindl is not just about durability and comfort: it is also a committed and rigorous eco-responsible approach. In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, Meindl demonstrates that it is possible to produce high-end shoes while respecting the planet.

Robust and durable materials, carefully selected

The quality of Meindl hiking shoes primarily relies on the choice of sustainable materials. The company works exclusively with certified suppliers, ensuring a controlled environmental impact. The leather, in particular, comes from tanneries that meet the strictest standards, including the LWG Gold Standard certification, which rewards the most virtuous practices in leather treatment.

Whenever possible, Meindl integrates recycled components into its products, without ever compromising quality. For example:
  • The models from the Heritage and Houston series incorporate up to 30% recycled materials in their soles, sourced from production scraps.
  • All rubber scraps used for protective bands are recovered and reintegrated into the manufacturing chain.
  • The laces, sewing threads, and many textile components are PFC-free, meaning free from harmful perfluorinated substances.

An environmentally friendly and traditional manufacturing process

Meindl remains faithful to its Bavarian roots, with a largely local production in Kirchanschöring, where manufacturing has never ceased for over three centuries. This approach ensures perfect traceability, mastery of manufacturing processes, and also limits transportation and thus the carbon footprint.
The cemented & double-stitched assembly method is one of the foundations of Meindl's quality. This method guarantees great stability, better longevity, and above all, it allows for easy resoling and repairing of shoes. This technical choice fully contributes to the goal of extending the product lifecycle and combating overconsumption.

Repairable shoes designed to last

Unlike short-lived products that fill the shelves of fast fashion, Meindl offers repairable shoes: it is possible to replace the soles, restore the seams, or revive the leather. This approach is part of a circular economy, where the choice is made to extend the lifespan rather than throw away.

A maintenance and repair service is offered by the brand to give a second life to worn shoes. Meindl thus encourages its customers to adopt a sustainable consumption, more respectful of resources.

Products free from harmful substances

Meindl actively pursues the goal of production without hazardous chemicals. All care creams used are water-based, without greenhouse gases, and free from PFC. A large part of the textile or leather components used in the shoes contain no controversial chemicals, and this approach is gradually being extended to all models.

Meindl Identity: traceability, animal welfare, and carbon neutrality

Among its most exemplary ranges, Meindl offers the Meindl Identity series, launched in 2013. This unique project in the footwear sector aims to combine traceability, respect for animals, and environmental sustainability.
The Identity models include:
  • 100% traceable leather, sourced from cattle raised according to European organic standards, in the Bavarian and Austrian Alps.
  • Total absence of chrome in the tanning of linings.
  • CO₂ neutral leather, thanks to reforestation projects supported by Meindl to offset emissions.
  • Promotion of short supply chains and local processing, in a logic of regional value creation.
With the Identity range, Meindl demonstrates that performance, comfort, and ecology can coexist without compromise.

A global approach for a more sustainable future

Through all its practices – from material selection to after-sales service – Meindl places sustainability at the heart of its strategy. Every industrial decision is guided by the concern to reduce environmental impact, optimize resource use, and pass on a responsible artisanal heritage.

In a context where consumers are increasingly attentive to the origin and quality of products, Meindl stands out as a reference in the world of sustainable outdoor. Investing in a pair of Meindl shoes means choosing a committed brand, forward-looking, that respects the environment while offering an exceptional level of performance.
