Chloe introduces you to the tour of the Grande Casse

Chloé our ambassador guides you

Chloé, our ambassador, takes you to discover the tour of the Grande Casse. Fellow hikers, whether it's early summer or autumn, this tour will allow you to savor the sumptuous landscapes of our beautiful Savoie. Let's be real: a tale of the terrain, equipment advice, and tips to enjoy without overthinking.

Who said you couldn't enjoy beautiful autumn days for hiking? The recipe is simple: a nice weather window, one or more friends (the more, the merrier), and a well-packed backpack. Once all the ingredients are gathered, we set off with friends to complete the tour of the Grande Casse over four days.

The Grande Casse, located in the French Alps in Savoie, is the highest peak of the Vanoise massif. Rising to 3855 m, this emblematic summit is situated between Pralognan-la-Vanoise to the west, Champagny-en-Vanoise to the north, and Termignon to the south. This tour is aimed at hikers in good physical condition, due to the elevation gain each day (about 1000 D+), some tricky descents, and the weight of the backpack (10 to 12 kg) if you pack for four days.

On the agenda: four intense days

Day 1: parking at Fontanettes in Pralognan-la-Vanoise → refuge de la Leisse. This first stage took us to the heart of the Vanoise National Park, passing by the magnificent Lac des Vaches with its backdrop of the Grande Casse glacier and the peak of Grande Glière. After reaching the highest point of the day (refuge at the Vanoise Pass at 2516 m), a short break, then heading to Lac Rond and the Croé-Vie bridge where we were lucky to spot some ibex. A long rolling path in the Leisse valley until we reached the refuge where the welcome was warm.

Day 2: refuge de la Leisse → refuge du col du Palet. After a first night in the refuge, we started the second day in great shape. Between lunar landscapes and passages near the pastures, we enjoyed the panorama before descending to Tignes and then climbing towards the Lognan cross, with a breathtaking view of Lake Tignes and the Grande Sassière. Upon reaching the pass, we joined the refuge du Palet for a quiet end to the afternoon.

Day 3: refuge du col du Palet → refuge du Bois. A day mostly spent descending through the Champagny-le-Haut valley. During this day, lovely views of the north face of the Grande Casse, dozens of marmots, and an improvised selfie with a daisy. A break at Laisonnay d’en haut, then a path along the Doron de Champagny until we reached the refuge du Bois.

Day 4: refuge du Bois → parking at Fontanettes. Last day, but not the least: about 19.5 km, 1400 D+ and 1200 D-. An early start, we followed the Doron de Champagny, crossed the EDF dam, traversed the Seil enclosure, and climbed towards Mont Chevrier, stopping at the Vuzelle waterfall. After the ascent, a well-deserved break, then sometimes technical descent on the Leschaux ravine before climbing to Mont Bochor and finishing on paths that cross the slopes to return to the car.

Account and sensations

After four days in the mountains, 65 km and 3500 D+ / 2500 D-, we return with images in our heads, slightly tired legs but mostly happy to have shared this moment with friends in the heart of the Vanoise National Park. A friendly atmosphere, laughter at the bivouac, and those moments when we are left speechless in front of a sunset over the ridges: that's what marks you. We are there for the effort, but above all for the beauty of the places and the camaraderie.

Equipment advice and little pro tips

The right equipment makes a difference when the terrain becomes demanding. We give you our checklist and advice based on field feedback to leave with peace of mind. Start with the essentials: a pair of suitable shoes, technical layers, and accessories for navigation. Also, remember to check your hiking equipment before you go.

For long stages, consider performance hiking clothing to wick away sweat and protect you from the wind. If your budget is tight, we also have options for affordable climbing gear for outings where technical equipment is necessary, without compromising safety.

Want to observe wildlife and flora? Bring outdoor binoculars for hikers: they open windows to ibex, marmots, and glacier details. And if you need to renew your pair, don't hesitate to check the purchase of AKU shoes online or look for where to buy hiking shoes suited to your foot type and sole. For those who like to compare, taking a look at Skechers models for hiking can give ideas based on your foot and usage.

We also help you optimize your budget: choosing hiking equipment at the best price doesn't mean sacrificing quality. We recommend investing in pieces that protect and last: shoes, waterproof jacket, backpack, and sleeping system. For smaller items, good deals exist, so dig a little before clicking.

Techniques, safety, and little tips

On this type of route, physical preparation matters. Get used to carrying, work on interval training for ascents, and test your shoes on several outings. Learn to read the weather and adjust the itinerary if the window isn't ideal. We advise avoiding late departures, especially on days with a lot of elevation gain.

  • Hydration: small frequent sips, salty snacks to avoid energy crashes.
  • Navigation: GPS tracking, paper map, and compass. Never rely on a single tool.

If you plan more technical outings, consider specific equipment and training: knowing the basics of mountaineering, knowing how to place a belay on a glacier, and respecting park rules. We are passionate but cautious.

Conclusion: come try the experience
