Morakniv: The Art of Swedish Cutlery

Once upon a time...

In the heart of Mora, Sweden, lies a long tradition of knife-making. For over 400 years, we've been shaping sharp knives for the rest of the world. The Morakniv story began in 1891, when Frost-Erik Erson returned to the village of Östnor in Mora after four years as a lumberjack in North America.

That same year, he founded his wooden sled factory, which also produced carts and knives for internal use. In those days, efficient resource management was paramount, and the use of material left over from production was almost taken for granted. This concept later proved to be a success.

Waves in the water

Shortly afterwards, knife production in the wooden sleigh factory took off, becoming a sought-after alternative product for travelling salesmen, who spread Mora knives on their travels around Sweden. By the turn of the century, Morakniv had become an established concept among craftsmen, creating ripples on the water. In just a few years, exports were established, mainly to wholesalers, gunsmiths and iron merchants in Europe.

The Color Red

The characteristic red handle was born at this time and has become, over time, a signature of Östnor knives. At first, the handle was made from ordinary untreated birch, scraps from the production of wooden sledges. Later, curly masur birch became the obvious material for the most expensive knives. However, when curly masur birch became a scarce commodity, they reverted to ordinary birch and, to give it the appearance of moguier, the handles were stained a reddish color before being varnished. As production increased, the stains were abandoned and the handles were painted a dark red color, which eventually appeared in many different shades over the years.

A helping spirit

Despite the competition, both in terms of market and manpower, there was always a sense of friendship between Östnor's companies. Even today, there is a so-called "Östnorsanda" where companies have helped each other in times of need.

Enduring craftsmanship

All knives with wooden handles are assembled by hand, just as when we started in 1891. Knives with the classic red handle, as well as our wood-carving knives, are assembled here. Hand-assembled knives account for around 10% of our production. Depending on the model and properties of the knife, either glue or riveting is used to attach the blade to the handle.
