When the first flakes fall and the mountain is dressed in white, ski enthusiasts know that the time has come for the battle against the cold, humidity, and wind. On the slopes or off-piste, conditions can be unpredictable: frost, snowfall, wind, or altitude temperatures. That’s why a ski jacket is an essential piece of equipment. It acts as a thermal barrier, a protective second skin capable of keeping you dry and warm while allowing your body to breathe.
Technical criteria for choosing a waterproof and breathable ski jacket
When you look at technical sheets, certain criteria must be taken into account. Here are the key elements to know when choosing your ski jacket:
Waterproofing: expressed in millimeters according to the Schmerber method (or “mm H₂O”): the higher this number, the more pressure the jacket can withstand before moisture begins to penetrate. For skiing in the mountains, we aim for at least 10,000 mm.
Breathability: it is quantified via indices such as MVTR (moisture vapor transmission rate) or RET (evaporative resistance). A high MVTR (for example, 15,000–25,000 g/m²/24h) is favorable, or a low RET (less than 12). Additionally, ventilation zippers (under the arms, on the sides) are useful “valves” for releasing heat during intense effort.
Insulation vs. shell layer:
There are often two main families of ski jackets:
Shell jackets (or “hard shell”): they do not contain integrated insulation (or very little). They must be combined with intermediate layers (fleece, lightweight down jackets) to modulate warmth according to conditions.
Insulated jackets: they incorporate synthetic or down insulation to provide warmth without an additional layer. Heavier, but practical for cold days without wanting to layer too many clothes.

Care tips to preserve the performance of your ski jacket
Cleaning: Close all zippers, Velcro, and fasteners before washing. Remove removable parts (fur, hood, snow skirt if possible). Use a gentle cycle at 30 °C with a special technical clothing detergent (like Nikwax Tech Wash, Granger’s, etc.). No fabric softener, no bleach, no high-temperature tumble drying. These products damage membranes and the water-repellent treatment (DWR).
Rinsing: Rinse well to eliminate any soap residue.
Reactivate the water-repellency (DWR treatment): Water-repellent product: apply a specific water-repellent spray or wash (e.g., Nikwax TX.Direct or Granger’s Repel). This restores the fabric's ability to repel water.
After use: Dry your jacket well after each use at room temperature, outdoors, away from radiators or direct heat sources. This prevents odors and premature fiber degradation.
