Whether you're new to mountain biking or looking to optimize your equipment for more challenging outings, getting the right gear is essential to riding safely, comfortably and independently. Here's everything you need to tackle your next mountain bike outing with a clear head.

BASIC PROTECTION

Helmets are the key piece of equipment. For mountain biking, choose a model that covers the back of the head and temples, ideally with MIPS-type technology for better shock management. The POC Cularis, for example, offers extensive protection, studied ventilation and optimal comfort for trail and enduro riding.
Don't forget your gloves, essential for absorbing vibrations and protecting your hands in the event of a fall. For more technical terrain, knee and elbow pads are a must. And don't forget goggles or a mask to protect you from the sun, mud or branches.

AUTONOMY = FREEDOM

On a mountain bike, a puncture or a broken chain can quickly transform your outing. To make up for mechanical glitches, always pack a multi-tool (with Allen keys, screwdriver and chain drift), a spare inner tube or tubeless bits, a mini-pump (or CO₂ cartridges), tire levers, and a quick link. All this takes up little space, but can save your ride.

COMFORT OVER THE MILES

The right clothing equipment will allow you to enjoy your outings without discomfort. Choose shorts with integrated skin to avoid soreness, a breathable technical jersey, and appropriate footwear (flat soles with good grip or automatic wedges depending on your pedaling style). You'll find what you're looking for in the following brands: Poc, Dainese or Scott. Good equipment means less fatigue and more fun.

DON'T FORGET TO HYDRATE (AND EAT!)

On a mountain bike outing, especially uphill or in the heat, your hydration is paramount. Take along a hydration pack with a water bag or a good isothermal water bottle. Slip in a few energy bars, dried fruit or a banana to recharge your batteries without weighing your bag down.

THE LITTLE EXTRAS THAT MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

For longer outings or in unfamiliar terrain, a GPS or an app like Komoot can save you a lot of detours. A small flashing rear light increases your visibility if you finish your loop at the end of the day. Finally, a light jacket or folding windbreaker can save your outing if the weather suddenly turns.
