How to choose the right shirt

Collar size

It's crucial to ensure that the collar is the right size. You should be able to pass three fingers along the side between your neck and the collar to enjoy a certain degree of ease and comfort. If the space is less than two fingers, you may not be able to stand wearing a closed collar all day.

Shoulder width

The shoulders are the first essential reference point. The seam at each shoulder should match the bone forming the point of the shoulder. If the seam is too short, it may reduce your build and make you feel cramped in your shirt. On the other hand, if the seam runs too low under the shoulder bone, it can lead to unsightly folds in the bust. It's therefore important to ensure that the shoulder seam is well positioned for optimum fit.

Sleeve length

To ensure that your shirt's sleeves are the right length, unbutton one sleeve and place your arm alongside your body. The ideal sleeve length is about 2 cm above the base of your thumb. This way, you can bend your arms freely and wear your shirt with a suit jacket without the sleeves riding up excessively and revealing your wrist. This measurement guarantees a comfortable, aesthetic fit for your shirt sleeves.

The torso

To quickly check if your shirt is too tight, take a look at the third button. If you notice tension there, it means your shirt is too tight. To make sure you're wearing the right shirt size, pinch about 2 cm of fabric on each side, under the armpits. You shouldn't feel any discomfort when you lift your arms. This will help you determine whether your shirt's fit is adequate and whether it offers sufficient freedom of movement.

Bending

An infallible test to make sure your shirt fits properly: you should be able to put your fist under the shirt or pinch about 3 cm of fabric on each side, at the level of the fifth button. For those with a flat stomach, it's even possible to go down to 2 cm. This test will enable you to check that the shirt is properly fitted to your figure.

Materials

Although cotton is a soft, comfortable natural fabric, it absorbs moisture, which can make it heavy and cold when wet. Consequently, it is not recommended for hiking in wet or cold conditions.

Wool, on the other hand, is a natural fabric that can be both soft and warm, even when wet. What's more, wool is odor-resistant, so it can be worn several times before needing to be washed.

Polyester, a lightweight, breathable synthetic fabric, is prized for its ability to dry quickly and wick moisture away from the skin. It is often used in sportswear for hiking, and is particularly suitable for warm-weather hikes.

Nylon, also a synthetic fabric, is lightweight and durable. It offers good abrasion and tear resistance, making it a common choice for hiking pants and jackets due to its durability.

With these characteristics in mind, you can choose the fabric best suited to your hiking and lifestyle needs, depending on weather conditions and personal preferences.
