VANS: the checkerboard story

The Vans brand, which was created in 1966 in the United States, is the chequered product seller. Although Vans used to specialise in customising its products, i.e. the possibility to personalise them, today it is the brand that sells checkered patterns. This idea came from Steve Van Doren, who noticed that skateboarders liked to color their soles this way. In addition, the wave of "two-tone" ska music sought to transcend racial tensions by displaying the checkerboard pattern as a sign of protest and racial unity. The checkerboard has become the brand's must-have graphic since it is as much worn by fans of urban style as it is by big celebrities.

Later on, fashion made Vans shoes omnipresent, especially among Californian skateboarders. The Vans brand therefore decided to adapt to the demand by offering better performing shoes for skateboarding with the Old Skool models.
