Hemp is a natural fibre cultivated with minimal impact on the environment. It does not require irrigation, pesticides or chemical fertilizers and is harvested and processed by hand. It is one of the most sustainable natural fibres on the planet, producing a beautifully fallen fabric comparable to linen. Unfortunately, it is illegal to grow industrial hemp in most countries of the world because the authorities continue to associate it with marijuana. We are currently importing our high-quality hemp from China, and hope that one day it will be possible to grow it freely again. Patagonia makes clothes only from hemp or from hemp mixed with other fibres such as recycled polyester, organic cotton and elastane.

• Organic cotton:

Not only is the quality of organic cotton equal to or even better than conventional cotton, but organic farming methods preserve biodiversity and ecosystems, improve soil quality and generally consume less water. Organic farming certainly requires more time, more know-how and skills and, at the moment, is more expensive. But it is worth it.
