Hemp Hemp is a natural fiber grown with minimal impact on the environment. It does not require irrigation, pesticides or chemical fertilizers and is harvested and processed by hand. It is one of the most sustainable natural fibers on the planet, producing a beautiful fabric comparable to linen. Unfortunately, it is illegal to grow industrial hemp in most countries around the world because the authorities continue to associate it with marijuana. We currently import our high quality hemp from China, and hope that one day it will be possible to grow it freely again. Patagonia makes clothing solely from hemp or hemp blended with other fibers such as recycled polyester, organic cotton and elastane.
Organic Cotton: Not only is the quality of organic cotton equal to or even better than conventional cotton, but organic farming methods preserve biodiversity and ecosystems, improve soil quality and generally use less water. Organic farming does require more time, know-how and skills and, for the time being, is more expensive. But it is well worth it.
