That's the crazy - but very serious - wager of Swiss start-up E-Outdoor, which presents E-SKIMO, the very first electrically-assisted ski touring kit. A revolutionary concept, designed to relieve the effort of climbing while preserving the spirit of the mountains. Presented as a world preview at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, E-SKIMO could well make history.




The VAE of the snow? Yes, but on skis.

E-SKIMO is directly inspired by the electrically assisted bicycle (VAE), but applied to snow-covered slopes. Unlike classic skis, this motorized kit attaches directly to skis, with a hub-mounted electric motor, rubber tread for traction, and a 220 Wh lithium-ion battery. All this for a bluffing gain in efficiency:

➡️ 80% more climbing speed,
➡️ And up to 4 times more ascent in a day.

 

Cutting-edge technology for demanding terrain

Each ski is equipped with a motor (20 Nm torque), a 6-axis inertial measurement unit and a GPS. This intelligent system detects in real time the skier's movements, weight, heel angle and even the position of each ski. The result: the motor activates automatically when you climb... and switches off when you stop.
A sensor in the pole handle acts as a circuit breaker in the event of a fall, ensuring maximum safety.

 

Once at the top... back to pure gliding

Once you've reached the top, the system can be dismantled in less than a minute. Battery, motor and traction band are stored in a dedicated bag, and you're ready to descend with perfectly functional, lightweight skis. The weight to carry? 3.2 kg for the two skis.
The only slight constraint: two openings are needed in the ski to pass the system through. A detail that has caused a few purists to cringe, but that doesn't seem to compromise the rigidity of the skis tested with partner Tecnica-Blizzard.
