It's about seeing how far you can go in a short period of time. The focus is on the health benefits and the fun, not just the physical performance. Speed hiking is a unifying sport. For young and old, the athletic and the less athletic. Regardless of where they live and regardless of their culture or skin color.
...where to start? Speed hiking doesn't have to involve long journeys or sleeping somewhere. You don't have to go far to find wilderness, beauty and simplicity. Your next adventure could start right out of work or on your doorstep. Creativity and simplicity are the watchwords here. At first, it may be wise to choose shorter trails that will allow you to backtrack and gradually increase your distances traveled.
...when is the best time of day to practice? The hour before dawn is a magical time to be outside. As the sun rises and the world slowly awakens, it's a time of calm and reflection. There is less traffic and city noise, we become aware of other sounds, like birdsong or our own breathing, and we notice small details that can inspire us. Early in the morning, we are fresh, curious and ready to explore. |
