Alpinstore Return Tips

  • Patagonia sizes according to American standards. For tops, prioritize your chest measurement. For bottoms, use your hip measurement (or waist measurement if it is larger).
  • Slim Fit: close to the body, can be worn over a thin base layer. Take your usual size or +1 if you wear a thick base layer.
  • Regular Fit: usual size. Designed to be worn over mid-layers.
  • Relaxed / Loose Fit: usual size or -1 for a more structured effect.
  • Women's Half Sizes: Patagonia offers short (Short), regular, and long (Long) sizes on certain pants. Check availability on the product page.
  • Ironclad Guarantee: Patagonia guarantees all its products for life. In case of sizing issues, returns and exchanges are simplified.

5. Understanding Patagonia Fits

Body Fit

Follows the contours of the body. Very fitted, designed for intense activities like fast hiking or trail running. Capilene base layers are often in Body Fit.

Slim Fit

Close to the body, more fitted than regular fit. Can be worn over a thin base layer. Slim ski pants and technical jackets are designed for mobility.

Regular Fit

Neither fitted nor loose. Perfect balance of shape/comfort. Regular technical jackets can be worn over thick mid-layers. Most Better Sweater fleeces are in Regular.

Relaxed / Loose Fit

More generous, allows draping. Baggies pants, surf shorts, and some t-shirts. Maximum comfort for casual or versatile uses. Sometimes -1 size for a more structured effect.

Main ranges by use:

Hiking / Trail: Torrentshell (waterproof), Houdini (windbreaker), Capilene Cool (technical t-shirts), Nano Puff (insulation), Quandary (versatile pants).

Climbing / Mountaineering: Calcite (GORE-TEX hardshell), Nano-Air (stretch insulation), R1 Fleece, DAS Light (extreme cold protection).

Ski / Snow: Powder Bowl, SnowDrifter, Jackson Glacier, Storm Shift (ski pants).

Everyday / Lifestyle: Better Sweater (fleece), Down Sweater (down jacket), Baggies (shorts), Retro-X (vintage fleece).

Water Protection Levels

DWR (Durable Water Repellency): surface water-repellent treatment. Repels splashes and light rain. Sufficient for 90% of daily uses. Can wear off over time, reactivates in the dryer or can be recharged with a DWR spray.

TPU Laminated (Black Hole): thermoplastic film applied to the fabric. True barrier against heavy and sustained rain. Ideal for cyclists, frequent outdoor outings in bad weather.

H2No® 3 Layers (SnowDrifter): Patagonia's breathable waterproof membrane. The only truly waterproof bag in the range. Designed for serious winter conditions.

Choosing Your Volume

10 — 25L: light day, daily work, short hike.

25 — 35L: full day, skiing, technical hiking, short travel.

35 — 55L: multi-day hiking, mountaineering, camping.

55L + (Duffel): expedition, transport of heavy equipment, long-duration travel.

7. How to Take Your Measurements (Patagonia Method)

Chest / Bust Measurement

Arms extended, measure around the widest part of the chest, just under the armpits. Tape measure horizontal, without tightening.

Waist Measurement

Lean slightly to the side to find your natural waist (the crease created by movement). Stand up straight and measure at the crease height.

Hip Measurement

Feet slightly apart, measure around the widest part of the hips and buttocks.

Sleeve Length

From the center of the back (nape), across the shoulder, bent elbow, to the wrist.

FAQ Patagonia Size Guide

Does Patagonia run large, small, or true to size?

Patagonia generally runs true to American standards. A men's M Patagonia corresponds to a chest measurement of 96 to 101 cm, which is a bit more generous than a typical European M (which starts around 96-98 cm). If you usually wear an M in European brands (Arc'teryx, Salewa, Rab), an M Patagonia will fit you. If you wear a snug French M (96 cm chest), take your measurement and compare it to the chart.

What Patagonia size corresponds to my EU/FR size?

For women, Patagonia uses US sizes: US 4-6 = S = EU 36-38 / FR 36-38. US 8-10 = M = EU 40-42 / FR 38-40. These equivalences are approximate as Patagonia sizes its clothing based on body measurements in cm, not direct EU size. Always use your chest or hip measurement as the primary reference. For men, an M Patagonia (96-101 cm chest) corresponds approximately to an EU 48-50.

What is the difference between the Black Hole and the Refugio?

The Black Hole is Patagonia's most robust and water-resistant bag, thanks to its TPU laminate that forms a true barrier against rain. Ideal for cyclists, frequent outdoor outings in bad weather, or trips where durability is key. The Refugio is lighter and better organized with its laptop pocket, accessible compartments, and more everyday/office-oriented design. It has sufficient DWR treatment for regular rain. It is recommended for work and hikes in good weather.

Does the Better Sweater fit normally?

Yes, the Better Sweater is in regular fit and fits true to size. It is one of Patagonia's best-selling fleeces, appreciated for its versatility (outdoor and casual). If you want to wear it only over a t-shirt with a fitted look, you can go down a size. If you plan to wear it over multiple layers during winter hikes, take your usual size or go up a size if you are at the upper limit.

What is Patagonia's Ironclad Guarantee?

Patagonia guarantees all its products for life against manufacturing and wear defects. If a product does not satisfy you — including in case of sizing issues after an order — Patagonia commits to repair, replace, or refund it. This program is part of their commitment to waste reduction (Worn Wear program). For Alpinstore, specific return and exchange conditions apply — please check our returns page.
