Gliding and snowboarding

Snowboarding is one of the most popular winter sports. Unlike skiing, snowboarding allows you to glide across the snow, standing with both feet on the same board. The exact year of origin remains undetermined, but we do know that one of the pioneers of this invention was Jake Burton, with the creation of the Burton brand.

Like downhill skiing, snowboarding comprises three disciplines: all-mountain, freeride and freestyle. And the practice of one of these disciplines will guide your guide to the right snowboard for you.

All-mountain snowboards are all-purpose boards, recommended when you're just starting out to familiarize yourself with the snow and the feeling of sliding, and to help you progress. Freeride boards, on the other hand, are generally longer and stiffer to cope with all off-piste terrain. Finally, freestyle boards are boards that can be recognized by their shape, with directional shapes and smaller, wider boards. This specificity has been designed for access to powder slopes.

How to find the right snowboard?

Did you say shape? What does it mean?

There are two shapes of snowboard: directional shape and twin tip shape.

Boards that have the front shape of a pointed board are called directional shape. As the name suggests, this shape is designed to give your board a unique direction. For example, you have the Rossignol Sashimi board, or the Nidecker liberty snowboard.

The twin tip shape is a board with rounded ends. This makes it possible to surf on both sides and change direction without difficulty. You'll find plenty of boards of this type from specialist Nitro, but also from Jones Jones, founded by snowboarder Jeremy Jones!

Choosing the right size for your snowboard depends on many factors, including your height, weight and ability. There's no standard way to choose.

Camber

There's no doubt about the importance of camber. There are 3 types: classic camber, inverted camber and flat camber. These represent the camber of your board. Flat camber is the difference between the two.

Think flex!

If you don't understand this term, then you should know that it corresponds to the stiffness of your board, and it's very important to take it into account when making your purchase. It's often rated on a scale of 1 to 10, ranging from soft to stiff. A soft flex is best suited to beginners, for easier board handling and freestyle riding. The stiffer the flex, the more suitable it is for freeride use.

Now that you know what's important to consider when choosing your snowboard, don't hesitate to get started and enjoy your best winter seasons yet!
